Jesus, friend of sinners

Image
It's Holy Week, so I'm not fighting about anything on facebook. I am not going to blog about gay marriage. I am going to blog about my conversation with my husband last night. "Does gay marriage affect me ?" I ask Robert, as I'm brushing my teeth. "What are you talking about?"  He asks. Then I remember that I'm the news correspondent in our family and quickly update him about what's going on in the world and on facebook. {We didn't get a good answer to that question, by the way. We talked it over and went through a lot.}  Robert is reading through the Bible right now with a group of men at church, led by our pastor. He is right in the worst of the Old Testament right now - judges, sin, punishment, demolishing of nations. I'm reading a Bible study about revival in your heart with our women's Bible study. I'm in the middle of studying God's holiness and my heart. I'm in the middle of reviewing the me...

The gift

I have a friend who mentioned in her blog once her inability to give gifts (http://www.whileyouwerenapping.com/2011/12/some-things-ive-been-thinking-about.html). It's a quite funny and enlightening to someone like me, a gift-giver and someone who speaks that love language. Example? I drew my sister-in-law's name for our gift exchange this year, and she wanted a sweater. The sweater I gave her was almost identical to the one she was wearing that day (the gift receipt was included, just in case). Spot on. She was impressed. [This being said, I am not the most gracious gift receiver. Partially because I'm a narcissist, and partially because it does actually hurt me. I feel like you didn't even want to try, don't care, and just did it out of obligation. It's like a slap in the face. That's part of having gifts as your love language, people, and I've talked to other gift-people who are the same way. I'm trying to get better about being gracious about the ...

Happy New Year

Were you hoping, dear readers, that my 2011 would end dull? Of course, it didn't. Robert and I went on a vacation with my family to southern California to celebrate Christmas. As we wrapped up from our move and watched the dust settled, I became very, very excited at the idea of a vacation. I also had a... feeling. Like, something is about to happen. We were on our way home from running errands the day we were supposed to leave for CA and I got a phone call from the airline. What they told me boiled down to this: either get to the airport in an hour and a half and get on an earlier flight, or you aren't making it to CA today, or possibly tomorrow. We live about 45 minutes away from the airport. We had not a single bag packed. We were not even at our house . As we packed in a frenzy and made a desperate call to Robert's dad to drive us like a madman to the airport, all I could think was, "Of course. Never a dull moment, right?" The good news is that we made it sa...

My teeth and provision

Remember Anxiety Girl? http://chrissysdullmoments.blogspot.com/2011/10/im-fixed-upon-it.html#comments The one who was scared to take a part time job because, how will we live?! It is week 2 and going well. I was sitting in the dentist chair yesterday, crossing my fingers and toes that I didn't need my second crown this year. They ended up just doing a filling, but the jury is out on whether or not that will work. Do you know what? I get a new dental benefit with my new job. It's only good through December. So even if I do need a crown, I have all this benefit I get to use. We had run out on our old insurance for me, and I'm sure I'll need more. It renews in January. Amazing, right? Oh, and I wound up last minute doing something extra yesterday that made money (all toward the deductible, which isn't even that high). Provision. And the part-time job? I will not be working part-time again until the week of Thanksgiving. In fact, I'm actually double booked and ne...

Come Thou Fount

Image
A cheesy picture of a natural fount, just for you. At this time next week, I will be watching the movers pack up and load up the last our belongings before hitting the road up to Indiana. (yay!) We spent a good deal of the past few days going through stuff and making the piles of... trash. Goodwill. making the move. Between this process and the break-in, I have come to realize one thing. And no, it's not that we have too much. I realize that every single day . It is that we have so much to be thankful for. The things themselves are almost meaningless. Not that we aren't incredibly blessed monetarily. In fact, some times, when I consider how much money we make, I almost laugh at the absurdity of it when compared to what the majority of the world lives on. But what matters is different. It's the warmth behind that old card you find tucked away, the memories of forgotten souvenirs, the smiling faces in old photos. When one of my best friends in the whole wid...

Some Friends...

...Are the best. Last night, I got to hang out with the lovely Nicole Dumas. We haven't seen each other since Bridget's wedding August. We live, like, super far apart. Our lives aren't really connected. But she can show up in Nashville for a conference, and we can hang out for hours like it's nothing . I love friends like that. Friends you don't have to try with, people who just get you, people who you will always have something in common with because you just do . Take my friend, Jen. We both moved in the past year. We see each other, um, like 1/100 of the time we used to. But when I see her, I feel like nothing has changed. How lucky am I to have people like that? Nicole and I talked about our past years, and the year or two to come. There will be (as she would say) so much life we are going to encounter. We will share walking Jamie Dolan down the aisle when it's her special day (because you are totally going to let us do that, right, Pipes?). We will move t...
